Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. The aunt was on during the night shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could indulge her passion of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay instantly was captivated after showing her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of that art can be an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her youth, however she was able to spend summers with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma be the inspiration for her later an animated film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In 1990, she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. As studying, DuVernay was interested in creating for the broadcast media. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one member of the jury, and then look through their trash. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at a small production studio right after she graduated from school. In this role, she launched her own PR company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
